A good number of traffic lights in Accra are to be powered by solar energy.
It move has come about as the Program of Urban Roads (DUR) gets to the renewable energy source as a means to reduce chaos at road intersections throughout the city, often caused by power blackouts that render traffic lights nonfunctional.
Already, traffic lights at intersections in areas such as the Nationalist Pizzark, American House, Kawukudi, Flagstaff Home and Fiesta Royale Hotel are actually run on solar energy.
Solar energy involves i would say the conversion of sunlight into vitality by either using photovoltaics debris (PV) or concentrated solar power (CSP). The CSP systems use lens or mirrors and a tracking appliance to focus a large area of sunlight perfect small beam. PV converts natural light into electric current using the photoelectric end result.
The DUR engaged a local company, A2Z, to install the traffic natural light panels and batteries for the 6 months intersections.
It will do same on the traffic lights on the N1 Freeway.
A2Z has completed work on foundation and the traffic lights at the a variety road intersections are no longer taking very own source of power from the national power.
